Celebrations break out at BJP headquarters

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Dancing to drumbeats, chanting slogans, bursting firecrackers and distributing laddoos, hundreds of BJP workers gathered at the party headquarters here Friday to celebrate the landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

Armed with portrait photos of prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and wearing the Bharatiya Janata Party's saffron-coloured caps, the crowd raised slogans of "Har Har Modi" and "Bharat Mata ki jai".

Ashoka Road, where the BJP national headquarters is situated, was cordoned off and closed.

That, however, did not stop the sea of supporters, and the scene appeared like that at a fair with many folk dancers performing.

Hundreds of boxes of laddoos were distributed among the crowd, including the hundreds of police personnel and dozens of media persons camped since early morning at the BJP headquarters at 11 Ashoka road.

It was a sea of Tricolours and BJP flags all over the headquarters while songs praising Modi played in the background.

A couple of elephants were also seen beyond the barricades, while some street vendors gathered to cash in on the swelling crowd.

The cheers grew louder as several LED screens showed the BJP getting a majority.

BJP general secretary Ramlal and party leaders Prakash Javadekar and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were seen playing drums.

Party leader Ravishankar Prasad hailed it as a victory of the people.

"It is a victory of the people of India. It is a tectonic shift in the nation's history, dynastic politics has lost," he said.

"People have voted across caste and religious lines and made the BJP victorious," Prasad added.

Party workers smeared gulaal (coloured powder) as they greeted one another.

"This is a historic event. The party has never won so many seats and the credit goes to Modi. The hard work has paid off," said Manish Batra, a 24-year-old, who had come from Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk area to celebrate the BJP's victory.
