Amit Shah's journey from a stock broker to Modi's close aide

New Delhi, May 18 (Daily Bhaskar) : When Amitbhai Anilchandra Shah was appointed as the general secretary in charge of delivering Uttar Pradesh for BJP, leaders in the state wondered what was in store. After all, Narendra Modi was sending his Man Friday.

Now, after delivering UP for Modi, Shah is gearing up for a wider national role, though the man remains tight-lipped about what that role is. For now, he has moved into an apartment in Delhi's tony Jangpura area, paying a rent of Rs. 38,000.

A student of biochemistry, Shah started out by dabbling in the stock market before trying his hand at the family business of PVC pipe making.

Born into a well-established business family in 1964, Shah was drawn to RSS as a boy and his association with Modi goes back to 1980s. Both joined BJP around the same time.

It was Narendra Modi who convinced then Gujarat CM Keshubhai Patel to appoint Shah chairman of Gujarat State Finance Corporation in 1995. From the strength of that strategic post Shah kept a vigil on the Gujarat BJP for his mentor while Modi was banished from the state a few years later as part of a peace deal between rebel Shankarsinh Vaghela and the BJP high command.

But his time came in 2002, when Modi won a thumping victory in the Gujarat assembly polls. Shah was given charge of as many as 10 portfolios including home, law and justice, prison, border security, housing and parliamentary affairs.

It was not only in floor management where Shah excelled, his skills soon saw BJP expanding its foot print into sports bodies and the cooperative sector.

He is also expected to play an important role in the new government. In every strategic discussion that the party has held this week in anticipation of a big win, Shah has figured.
He is the man that Modi had handed the task of delivering the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh for the BJP in the general elections. Known for his election winning abilities, Shah had 11 months to effect a 360 degree reversal - the BJP held 10 seats in UP and its cadres had been in disarray for years.

Today BJP has registered a mindboggling win in Uttar Pradesh by bagging 71 out of 80 seats. The BJP's best performance in UP previously was in 1998 - 57 out of 85 seats since Uttarakhand was yet to be carved out of it. Amit Shah scripted the UP turnaround with a watertight strategy, drawing on the state's historical electoral dynamics like the caste factor.
A few days before the region voted, he stoked controversy by describing Muslim-dominated Azamgarh, from where SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav has contested, as a "hub of terror." It was an ill-concealed effort to polarise Hindu votes for the BJP in eastern UP.

Mr Shah also played on communal polarisation in western UP, recently scarred by deadly riots. He fielded three party leaders named in riot cases and made an incendiary speech in Muzaffarnagar, the epicentre of the riots, earning a temporary ban from campaigning from the Election Commission.

That's not the only controversy Shah has been in recently. He is at the centre of a huge row over the alleged illegal surveillance of a young woman by the Gujarat police when he was the state's home minister.

He got a clean chit this month from the CBI in the 2002 encounter killing of Mumbai student Ishrat Jahan, but still faces murder and other charges in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and is out on bail.

He has been in prison and also spent almost two years exiled by court from Gujarat.

Every third of the newly elected member of the Lok Sabha has a criminal background, an analysis of the disclosures they have made in their affidavits has shown.

An analysis of 541 of the 543 winning candidates by National Election Watch (NEW) and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) shows that 186 or 34 percent newly elected MPs have in their election affidavits disclosed criminal cases against themselves.

In 2009, 30 percent of the Lok Sabha members had criminal cases. This has now gone up by four percent.

    Vincy Bangkok

Where was your advice to Congressmen including late PM Rajiv Gandhi butcherer of more than 3000 sikhs when they occupied the highest post? Why did you not talk when Congress went on giving tickets and even shielded all those involved? Even after 30 years those involved are not punished. At least in Gujarat the guilty are punished. If SC has said Modi is not guilty who r u to pronounce guilt of Modi?
Your frustration at Modi becoming PM is making you talk now. May be you and many others like u are a frustrated lot now. Go on talking about Modi. It will do you good.

This Chanakya is already a expert in fake encounters and now proved as expert in winning elections. Amit Shah is the key player in fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan,Tulsiram Prajapati, and Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife. The CBI charge sheeted Amith Shah as per statements made by IPS officers who are now either on bail or jail. Amit Shas was imprisoned for more than three months in Sabarmati jail for the Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case.
So we are on the process of appointing murderers as PM and Home ministers.

Its time that BJP should be given their due.
Though a die-hard Congress fan I was disgusted to see RaGa being projected as a leader. I am sure corruption and RaGa were the main reasons Congress were routed. Lets hope that Modi turns out to be the leader that he has been projected as and works more for the unity and prosperity of the nation.
To all BJP fans, congratulations and hope that we don't keep any grudges against each other even though we have different political ideologies.

Sohrabuddin’s wife Sheikh wife was poisoned and burned in DIG’s farm house.

You love him or hate him but you cannot ignore Amith shah factor in the 2014 verdict. As someone said he was clearly the "man of the match" who literally delivred UP to BJP. I was always thinking what would happen to Gujrath if modi goes to center. But I guess modi has already ed and trained number 2 after him. I also forsee Amith Shah as a next big thing in BJP very soon, we may even see him heading the country. His looks give us a opinion that he may be very communal but I have watched his interview with Rajath Sharma and Barka Dutt,he carefully chooses his words that he should not be caught on wrong foot. Talks very humblely and acknowledge s that he is a small soldier of BJP entrusted with a job to deliver which he is doing. Never arrogant and gave any communal hinting statement. In fact I had a different opinion altogether. Even yesterday when Raj nath Singh was trying to get close with Modi in varanasi after getting our of the car Amith shah just went out in a different door and made way for his master and rajnath by clearing the crowd. But modi made sure his best man AS was sitting next to him in the dias and was having g long conversation with him.I dint think he will lobby to be a prime post in cabinet but am sure for his services he will be awarded suitably by his masters. In fact I liked his attitude.

Due to some cases against him Modi may not give him post in his cabinet as of now until is comes out clean but for sure a plum position awaits him either as BJP president or chief election strategist for BJP in upcoming polls especially in Maharashtra or the head if the cricket board etc.

Master strategist of the century should go to Amit Shah.
