Four policemen killed in Afghanistan attack

Kabul, May 21 (IANS): At least four policemen were killed Wednesday when Taliban militants launched an attack on a security checkpoint in Afghanistan.

"A huge number of armed militants stormed an Afghan Local Police (ALP) checkpoint in Basram area along Mehtarlam-Alingar main road in the eastern province of Laghmanat around 3.30 a.m. The armed clash lasted for a while leaving four ALP cops dead," Xinhua quoted the provincial government as saying in a statement.

The ALP, or community police, was established in 2010 to protect villages and rural districts where army and police have limited presence.
