Thai coup leader dissolves Senate

Bangkok, May 24 (IANS): Thai army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha, who effected a coup Thursday, dissolved the Senate Saturday and transferred a few important government officials to inactive posts.

Prayuth said that he had taken over the authority of the House of Representatives and the Senate for the time being in case any actions require approval of the parliament, Xinhua reported.

Those transferred by the order of the military junta include police chief Pol Gen Adul Saengsingkaew, Department of Special Investigation chief Tharit Pengdit and defence undersecretary Nipat Thonglek.

Pol Gen Adul, Tharit and Gen Nipat were viewed as supporters of the elected government which was earlier deposed by the coup junta.
