Madrid, May 25 (IANS): Spanish Emergency services Sunday said that a total of 233 people suffered injuries during Real Madrid's celebrations after winning a historic tenth Champions League title.
Real were two minutes away from defeat before Sergio Ramos' 93rd minute header equalised against local rivals Atletico Madrid and in extra time Real Madrid won the title as Gareth Bale, Marcelo and a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty punished an exhausted rival Saturday night, reports Xinhua.
The final whistle sparked celebrations both in Lisbon, where the final was played, and in Madrid where hundreds of thousands of Real Madrid fans took to the streets to celebrate.
Many of them went to the Plaza Cibeles, where Real Madrid traditionally celebrate their titles and stayed until the team arrived around 6 a.m. Sunday.
The Emergency services said that the vast majority of the injuries were minor -- cuts, bruises, panic attacks or dizziness -- but 37 people were taken to hospital for various reasons, such as X-rays or stitches.
Real Madrid will hold a further celebration in their Santiago Bernabeu Stadium Sunday night.
