Seven killed in South Korea bus terminal fire

Seoul, May 26 (IANS/EFE): A fire at a bus terminal Monday led to the death of at least seven people and injuries to 20 in South Korea, a country which has still not come to terms with the loss of over 300 people in a recent ferry mishap.

The fire broke out around 9.10 a.m. at an underground construction site at the Goyang Bus Terminal in Goyang, northwest of Seoul, firefighters said.

The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes.

Seven bodies were recovered from the construction site in the basement of the terminal, but the authorities are yet to establish their identities.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, and the condition of two of them is said to be critical.

The authorities suspect that welding work in the terminal sparked off the fire.

The bus terminal has several bus bays and a multiplex comprising a supermarket and a movie theatre.
