BWF president pleased with growth of Indian badminton

New Delhi, May 28 (IANS): Badminton World Federation (BWF) president Poul-Erik Hoyer Wednesday said he was pleased with the growth of the sport in India and congratulated the Indian team for clinching a bronze at the recently concluded Uber Cup.

The Saina Nehwal led Indian badminton contingent created history here last week when they earned their maiden medal at the World Women's Team Championship for the Uber Cup.

"We are pleased to see the growth of badminton in India. I would like to congratulate India for winning the bronze medal at the Uber Cup. This performance shows that the sport is growing well here," Hoyer said.

India hosted the Thomas and Uber Cups for the first time ever from May 18-25 at the Siri Fort Sports Complex and Hoyer, who won the men's singles gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, said that he was satisfied with India's organisational capabilities.

"I am very satisfied with the way the Thomas and Uber Cups were hosted in India. It was very professional, not just the stadium but also the television coverage. It has lived up to our expectations," said the Dane.
