Kasargod, May 30: Police team led by DySP R P Ranjith have arrested the main accused in connection to a conspiracy to kill a contractor.
The arrested person is identified as Madhoor Patla resident Mohammed Azharuddin (24). He was arrested near a restaurant in the outskirts of Kasargod on Tuesday May 27. The police who had gone there in the guise of contract killers arrested him.
Mohammed Azharuddin had allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kill contractor Ashraf, a resident of Patla and had taken the help of contract killers to execute his plan. Ashraf had complained to Kasargod district police chief on April 9 that he had received death threats.
The police team led by district superintendent of police had launched a search operation to nab the accused. Meanwhile, the police received information that the accused had sought the help of contract killers. The police pretended to be contract killers and contacted Azharuddin through phone.
The 'contract killers' demanded a sum of Rs 10 lac to kill the contractor and Rs 10,000 advance. They asked Azharuddin to come near a restaurant in the outskirts. When Azharuddin came there, the police who were in the guise of contract killers arrested him while he was handing over the money.
It is said that Azharuddin had planned to kill Ashraf suspecting that he had passed on some secret information to the police. Azharuddin had contacted a killer a few days ago. The killer had demanded Rs 10 lac for the murder and Rs 4 lac to chop off the hands and legs of the victim. However, the killer backed off at the last minute. The police came to know that Azharuddin was looking for other professional killers.
The police have said that Azharuddin is an accused in several criminal cases in Vidyanagar and Adooru police station limits.
Policemen Pradeep Chavara, Sunil Abraham, Sunil Siriak, Saju Manjeshwar, Prakashan Nileshwara, Ranjith and Sunil Kumar took part in the operation.
