Udupi, Jun 2: Various groups put a siege to the grama panchayat office on Monday June 2, opposing the proposed formation of Kaup town panchayat including Uliyargoli grama panchayat.

The protestors said that combining Uliyargoli grama panchayat with proposed town panchayat would be detrimental to the development of the village and the students would be deprived of the facilities from the government.

They added that the villagers would be burdened with additional tax; the grama panchayats of Saligrama, Mulki and Moodbidri upgraded from earlier system were experiencing hardship.

Kiran Alva Bavuguthu, the president, Uliyargoli BJP local committee, Ananda Putran, the president, Kaifunjalu Mogaveera Mahasabha, Krishna Kotian , Sachin Shetty, Shivaji Kotian, Karavali Friends, Youth Friends, Jwali Friends, Mogaveera Mahasabha, Veera Maruthi gym and the members of various groups participated in the protests.

Udupi zilla panchayat member Katpadi Shanker Poojary, Uliyargoli grama panchayat president Pradeep Kumar, grama panchayat member Chandrahas Shetty, grama panchayat development official Shruthi Kanchan were present on the occasion and received the memorandum from the protestors.

“No payment is possible for the unemployed under employment guarantee scheme if Uliyargoli is included in the town panchayat. Besides that the tax will be increased, cheating by rural department and other problems will crop up," said Katpadi Shanker Poojary.

He added, "This will be bad for the democratic process. So zilla panchayat member Arun Shetty and I have opposed the proposal in the general meeting of the zilla panchayat.”
