'Crimes against women to be taken up in parliament'

New Delhi, June 5 (IANS): Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti said Thursday that there would be a debate in the Lok Sabha on rising crimes against women and the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.

"Uttar Pradesh has become a state which is known for growing crimes against women. All the political parties now have to talk and debate on this issue and as soon as the parliament session starts there will be a debate about the rising crimes against women and law and order situation in the state," Bharti told reporters outside parliament.

Attacking Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, she added: "It is true that crime and misbehaviour against women happens all over the country, but difference is that in UP the leaders give pro-racist remarks and shield people who commit crimes against women."

The reaction came after several rape cases were reported from the state in past few days.
