South Korea to conduct first joint drill in US


Seoul, June 5 (IANS): The South Korean army will conduct its first joint military drill in the US for four weeks starting from next week to enhance its combined combat capability, the defence ministry said Thursday.

Defence ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said that the army would stage a joint exercise with the US from June 9 to July 1 at the National Training Centre (NTC) in Fort Irwin, California, Xinhua reported.

It will be the first joint military exercise between Seoul and Washington to be conducted on the US mainland. 

The previous drills of the two allies have been carried out on the Korean peninsula.

The spokesman said a variety of combined arms exercise would also be held at the training centre.

One company of the South Korean Army's mechanised infantry and one unit of special forces would be dispatched to the US training centre for four weeks.
