London skyscraper evacuated after smoke in basement

London, June 5 (IANS): A London skyscraper, said to be western Europe's tallest standing tower at more than 1,000 feet, was evacuated Thursday following reports of smoke in its basement.

Seven fire engines with 50 firefighters reached the scene after the fire brigade was called to investigate the Shard tower at 10.30 a.m. this morning, the Independent quoted London Fire Brigade as saying.

Around 900 people were evacuated from the building, fire service officials said, adding that a full evacuation of the Shard's 72 floors had been called as a precaution. It is believed to be the first evacuation of the giant tower.

There was no immediate suggestion of there being a fire, the officials added.

The fire service later said that smoke "appeared to be dissipating" and that crews were investigating what caused the alarm at the tower.

Police and paramedics were also called to the building, though a statement from the Metropolitan Police said there were no reported injuries or arrests.
