Mumbai, June 8 (IANS): The Justice Mudgal IPL Probe Committee met here Sunday and named former India captain Sourav Ganguly as the former cricketer to assist the committee in its investigation into the betting and spot-fixing scandal in last year's Indian Premier League.
"The Committee held its meeting in Mumbai on 7.6.2014 and 8.6.2014. The Committee considered the names of a few players and decided to appoint Mr. Sourav Ganguly as the player to assist the Committee in its probe," a statement here read.
"Consent was sought from Mr. Ganguly and he has agreed to assist the Committee as per the Hon’ble Supreme Court order dated 16.5.2014," the statement added.
The committee has to submit its report to the Supreme Court by August.
The Supreme Court last month appointed Justice Mukul Mudgal -- retired chief justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court -- to probe allegations of spot-fixing and betting against 13 people, including some cricketers who played the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2013, and inaction thereon by Board of Control for Cricket in India president N. Srinivasan.
The other two members of the committee are L. Nageswar Rao (additional solicitor general of India) and senior advocate Niloy Dutta.
Justice Mudgal will be assisted by senior IPS officer B.B. Mishra, who is deputy director general of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
The team will have three police officers, one each from police forces from Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Except for powers to arrest, the investigating team will have all the powers to call and examine people it deems fit and record their statements.
