Cloudy day in Lucknow, but mercury set to rise


Lucknow, June 9 (IANS): Residents of Lucknow woke up to a pleasant Monday morning as it turned cloudy and cool breeze swept the city. The Met Office called it a "temporary" respite and said the temperature is likely to hover around 45 degrees Celsius during the day.

The city has witnessed extreme heat wave condition for the past one week.

Uttar Pradesh is reeling under an unprecedented heat wave for the past one week as mercury has steadily climbed and the power supply is erratic. 

Lucknow sizzled at 43.7 degrees Celsius Sunday and a trader identified as 50-year-old Yamuna died owing to heat in Sadatganj village. He went to a vegetable market and fell down on the roadside while returning home. Doctors said he died due to extreme heat conditions.

Most of the Bundelkhand region of the state remained sizzling hot with the day temperatures recorded at a high of 47.4 degrees Celsius in Banda district, 47.2 degrees in Hamirpur, and 46.4 degrees Celsius in Jhansi.

The day temperature in Etawah and Fatehgarh districts also remained high at 46.4 degrees Celsius, while in Agra the mercury soared to 46.7 degrees.

The state has been facing grim power scenario with power outages lasting for several hours at a stretch adding to the summer woes.
