Himachal tragedy: Survivors in shock, say there was no warning

Mandi, June 9 (PTI): For the ill-fated group of students of a Hyderabad-based engineering college merrily taking photos on the banks of Beas river in Himachal Pradesh, tragedy struck in a matter of couple of minutes as they were washed away in the swirling waters which suddenly rose several feet.

The gush of water turned out to be a tide of death, recounted surviving students. Many of them, particularly girls, were seen in a state of panic in Himachal Pradesh, where they are accommodated in lodges.

24 students were washed away on Sunday evening in river Beas near Thalot on Manali-Kiratpur Highway, 40 kms from Mandi. Five bodies were recovered on Monday.

The students were caught unaware by the sudden discharge of water in the river from the reservoir of 126 MW Larji project.

Even as rescue and relief operations were on at the incident spot, the surviving students had a harrowing tale to narrate on the tragedy.

"It all happened in a matter of only 2-3 minutes," said one of the students.

Ravi Kumar, a student who was part of the group from the Hyderabad college, said, "I tried to alert my friends... I ran towards my friends but by the water level had shot up."

19-year-old TV Suharsha, said their group had 48 students, three faculty members and a child of one of the faculty members.

"It was around 5.30-6pm on the third day of our tour and we all wanted to stop for a break.

"We were all sitting on the rocks, taking photos. There was a big rock in the middle of the river and everyone wanted to reach to the top of that rock. Some made their way to it by stepping on a series of small rocks.

"After about 10 minutes, the water level started rising. I was upstream and I noticed it first. I began screaming, trying to alert everyone as I rushed back," a shocked Suharsa said.

It is such a dishonor and shame for the Hydro company that has no safety regulations in place and also the state Govt that has no control over small companies - I can not understand how unconcerned people of authority can be. This matter should be taken up seriously at the central level. My heart goes out to the children who came to enjoy the beauty of Himachal Pradesh and the heartless human beasts extinguished their lives in a blink.

    UttharaKhand was a Natural Disaster.

    HimachalPradesh was a ManMade Disaster.

The day on which Modi took over the charge there was Railway accident. 40 passengers died and 100 injured.

Modi cried in the Parliament for his fate.

Citizens cried in the Railway accident.

Later, our one soldier died on the border.

Later, humans are sacrificed for treasure.

Now 24 Engineering innocent students died just because of the docile, Lethargic and sleeping governance of Himachal Pradesh government.

What was the BJP agenda when UttharaKhand natural disaster???!!!

    Tell me avani?!

    BJP kare tho Chamatkar.
Congress kare tho Balathkar. Is it so tell me.

First of all Please do check who is ruling Himachal Pradesh? BJP or Congress? Why you are asking me Balatkar/Chamatkar etc. In my post I did not blame any party at all. Your post reminds me of "Mother in law blaming Daughter in law's kaalguna for everything happens in the house as soon as she enters the house as daughter in law"! Any way, no point in explaining to you. Bye

These Tragedies are continuing since Modi took over office, Train, Munde and Engineering students. First of all we should not forget Modi is also a step of revolutionary Babri Masid dispute. Look we adore leaders for change but forget the facts of inspiration behind the Leaders steps, whatever the way. People are also not respecting the GOD, instead MIMICKING some steps, In tulu we call it as NINNAE (Oops Maduris Nene) again something.

In the developed country they respect human life where as in India they are treated like animals. They treat precaution to any danger to the humanity as 'chalta hai'.
Do we care for Honor-killing, Bride-burning, ethnic cleansing, RTO-leniency, police-leniency and communal hatred where thousands of people are killed.
We want change, a change for good of humanity. A change for the protection of Aam Aadmi.
    Jai Hind!

In the present situation the Parents are having only one or two children. They take care of their children with utmost interest and care/in a goodly manner from their childhood till they obtain a job for their livelihood.

WHAT IF A PARENT HAVES ONLY ONE SON OR A DAUGHTER AND DISAPPEAR WITHIN NO TIME AFTER BEARING ALL HARDSHIPS OF TAKE CARE OF THEIR EDUCATION. WILL NOT THEIR HEART BREAK.

AND THESE GOVERNMENTS ARE INDULGED IN INDIA SHINING, FAKE DEVELOPMENTS ON THE TWITTER, FACEBOOK EAT SWEETS AND MERRY MAKING. THE INNOCENTS WASHED AWAY IN NEGLIGENCE OF THE DEPARTMENTS LETHARGIC AND SLEEPING ATTITUDES.

All the dams in india should install alarm siren......while releasing the water from the dam, they have to siren before 30 minutes at least people to vacate the place.

Very sad incident. Hydro power generation Company shall be booked for their negligence. Here I'm unable to understand why there is no warning by public announcement system downstream of the dam (At least one KM length in both shores of the channel)where water is being released before opening/releasing water from dam?. India is marching forward and in technology far advanced country. Why there is no interlock(technically called as “ Open release”) in such a way that before opening water gate automated siren followed by recorded public paging, "water release started" ete. This is very simple logic to be implemented in the DCS/ PLC. Yes there will be some financial cost involved to install paging system. But human life cannot be purchased by money. Think about 24 young engineering students life.

This sorrowful incident is nothing but owing to the sheer negligence of authorities. They should have put a notice clearly and also at all danger points, at the dam water releasing time, guards could be stationed. Even after flood ravaged Uttarakhand where Wing Commander Darry Castelino died, the authorities are still having a chalta hai attitude. I heard there was a board somewhere outside India. "Shark infested area. Swimming is prohibited. Survivors will be prosecuted".

This is a sad incident! So many young lives snuffed out for no fault of theirs! The district authorities should clearly punish those who showed laxity in their duty & ensure no such accidents occur in future

There was no warning and the help team to trace the washed away were came lethargic even if they were on the spot as complained by the relatives of the deceased.

When Uttharkand tragedy occurred the big mouths shouted like anything. Now in Himachal Pradesh bjp is ruling and why they didn't apply rescue teams immediately?!

    Why, Why, Why???!!!
Where are the big mouths now???!!!

My sympathies and condolences to the deceased relatives.

Dear Joseph all your blah blah have only one point agenda clearly visible. Your concern about the victims of the tragedy hides behind your agenda. In one of the comments you went on to say in Himachal Pradesh BJP is ruling! I cant even laugh at your comments as the news article is about a serious matter. I hope that missing students will resurface alive some how. God help them and RIP the departed souls. Let all the Govts irrespective of which party it belongs realize the seriousness of the issue and do corrective and preventive measures. Hope Central Govt does something concrete in this direction too.
