Rio police investigates shooting incident


Rio de Janeiro, June 17 (IANS/EFE): The police here is investigating an incident in which an officer opened fire against protestors during the ongoing FIFA World Cup, an official said.

The accused police officer surrendered Monday and will be investigated by authorities who also announced that an officer fired in the air in an attempt to disperse the protestors, reports EFE.

Many demonstrations were organised Sunday prior to the Argentina vs Bosnia and Herzegovina game near the famous Maracana Stadium condemning the excessive costs of hosting the World Cup while neglecting other social sectors in Brazil.
