Dharminder Lilly edges Asif in snooker championship


Sharm-El-Sheikh (Egypt), June 23 (IANS): India's Dharminder Lilly pulled off a sensational 4-3 result against former world champion Muhammad Asif of Pakistan for his third consecutive win in the league phase of the IBSF 6 Reds World snooker championship here.

From two frames down Sunday, Lilly fought back to level at 2-all with a break of 66 in fourth and won the next for a 3-2 advantage.

Muhammad, however, claimed the sixth and had the seventh all sewn up, but a miss on the last pink saw Lilly sink the colour to take the match 4-3.

Also maintaining his unbeaten run was Ketan Chawla who recorded his fourth straight win and like Lilly tops his group.

In the team championship (15 reds), the pairs of Sourav Kothari-Shivam Arora (India-3) and Kamal Chawla-Lilly (India-4) chalked up their fourth and third win, respectively.

6 Reds (Individual) - Men: Group A: Laxman Rawat bt Hassan Kerde (Australia) 4-1. Group B: Ketan Chawla bt Mustafa Alnemer (Saudi Arabia) 4-1. Group C: Nadeem Ahmed lost to Walid Hamdy 1-4 (Egypt). Group R: Faisal Khan bt Yaser Elsherbiny (Egypt) 4-2. Group S: Kamal Chawla bt Keith Sheldrick (Ireland) 4-1. Group U: Dharmender Lilly bt Muhammad Asif (Pakistan) 4-3. Group AD: Syed Saleem lost to Kacper Filipiak (Poland) 2-4.

Women - Group C: Indira Gowda lost to Siripaporn Nuanthakhamjan (Thailand) 1-3. Group D: Neena Praveen bt Samah Alhallak (Syria) 3-0.

Team Championship (15 Reds):

Men - Group B: India-3 (Sourav Kothari/Shivam Arora) bt Syria 4-1. Group C: India-2 (Kamal Chawla/Dharmender Lilly) bt Russia-2 4-1. Group G: India-4 (Ketan Chawla/Varun Madan) bt Morocco-1 4-1.

Women - Group A: India-1 (Vidya Pillai/Amee Kamani) lost to Egypt 5-0. India-4 (Neena Praveen/Indira Gowda) lost to Australia-2 2-3. Group B: India-3 (Umadevi Revanna/Arantxa Sanchis) lost to Thailand 2-3.
