24,000 hit by Assam floods


Guwahati, June 24 (IANS): Over 24,000 people have been affected by floods in four districts of Assam, officials said Tuesday.

State Disaster Management Authority officials said flood waters have entered parts of Lakhimpur, Sonitpur, Darrang and Udalguri districts in the past one day.

A total of 43 villages have been affected in the floods.

The district administrations have opened five relief camps in Darrang and Udalguri to shelter the marooned people.

A total of 9,528 people have taken shelter in these relief camps.

The Central Water Commission said the Brahmaputra river was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh while the Jia Bharali river was flowing above the danger level in Sonitpur district.
