Government rolls back rail fare hike partially

New Delhi, June 24 (DHNS) : Bowing to pressure from within its ranks, the NDA government on Tuesday announced a partial rollback in the rail passenger fare hike for the suburban sector, even as train travel becomes costlier by over 14 per cent across the country from Wednesday.

The Railways Ministry announced on Tuesday night that there will be no increase in second-class ordinary fare up to 80 km of travel. It also announced that second-class monthly season tickets will now be charged at 14.2 per cent over the existing rates as per extant instructions.

The Railways also gave some relief to monthly season ticket holders by reverting to 15, instead of 30, the number of trips for which they will have to pay to travel unlimited times in a month.

The move is likely to benefit lakhs of suburban commuters in metros like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi. The revised order said the fare hike in the unreserved segment shall come into force from June 28.

The decision was announced hours after a delegation of BJP and Shiv Sena MPs, including Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal, met Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda and demanded re-consideration of the massive increase in passenger fares in the Mumbai suburban sector.

As many as 75 lakh commuters use the Mumbai suburban railway system daily, making it one of the busiest suburban sectors across the country. With Assembly elections in Maharashtra due in October, the fare hike had ruffled feathers within the state BJP and also upset key ally, the Shiv Sena.

An editorial in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece, Saamana, had likened the steep hike in suburban rail fare to the common man being run over by a train.

The fare hike announced by the Narendra Modi government had sent the Maharashtra BJP leaders into a tizzy prompting them to work up the phone lines to make senior ministers see reason. They conveyed the anguish among suburban commuters to the central leadership, including Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda.

“As per the June 20 order, the hike in rail fares to the tune of 250 per cent was unjust. We were assured by the railway minister that the decision would be reconsidered,” Vinod Tawade, Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, told reporters after leading a delegation to the railway minister on Tuesday morning.

I imagined from Modi's talk before election that he would bring in effeciencies and effectiveness through better management and would be able to lower the cost of living for ordinary people.

He seems to be interested in raising the price of everything that is essential to the common man in the first few months itself far higher than what UPA has done.

This was what exactly the Railway minister under Janata Party did in 1978. He proposed 100% increased in the season ticket fare and when there was opposition, rolled back to 50%. If he were to propose 50% at the beginning people would have opposed the move. With this increase, hope there will be a good Railway budget.

    B) CROWDED RAILWAY STATION FOR E.G.
IN MUMBAI CHURCHGATE TO VIRAR AND CST TO THANE. YOU HAVE AN OPTION OF
DEVELOPING STATIONS SAY 5/7 STOREYS - DO THAT AND RENT IT OUT - THIS TOO WILL FETCH GOOD REVENUE.
    C) SELL THE OPEN RAILWAY PLOTS TO PRIAVE DEVELOPERS FOR MARKET RATE.
    D) KEEP ALL THE CORRUPT PEOPLE AWAY WHILE CARRYING OUT ABOVE EXERCISE ESPECIALLY THE SO CALLED HIGHLY EDUCATED IAS AND IPS PEOPLE WHO ARE INVOLVED IN MOST OF THE SCANDALS.
THIS SHOULD GIVE RAIWALYS SOME RELIEF. BY DOING THIS YOU DONT HAVE TO RAISE RAILWAY FARES YOU CAN MAINTAIN THE SAME FARE.

Government should not give in to pressure from outside or within.
They had decided this hike in fare with various corrective measures\enhanced facilities to commuters,to recover from the heavy red figure, modernisation etc. as such they should go ahead with their decision. UPA even with split mandate and with unscrupulous opposition had decided to increase the fare for the same purpose as being done by BJP who have now realised the need for it. Hope the BJPians now realise if they had not opposed, by now we, people, would have had better facilities.
Everywhere such hike is necessary for sprucing up Government held machinery but should make sure the funds allotted, at least 50% of it definitely used for the purpose that it is allotted and Ministers and officials taken to task in case work did not progress in the given period.
It is time Government took firm decisions and go forward with them.
There is not a single policy by the Govt. that is not challenged and agitated \opposed. Those who were indulging in it had their own party reason for it (Like earlier, BJP)
I reiterate, Modi should see that his Ministers perform well and not becoming too corrupt. Modi has started to do away with certain unnecessary dept. which is a good move towards speedy clearances and holding in-charge responsible for any lethargy.
In that respect I wish him and his Government well.
I want to see a better India as time passes.
Pls support the present Govt. and if it does not perform well then people can decide at the end of the term....
It is so obvious now that BJP is using everything that UPA (Congress) had made ready and were on the verge of implementing. It is a boon to BJP Govt. in this regard.
it also shows BJPians that it was BJP who was hindering the progress of the country earlier.
Past is past. We will look forward to the future.

Probably you may not be aware the railway lines in Mumbai. Western line runs thru Churchgate to Virar, 80 KM. Central line CST to Karjat, 77 KM. These lines are more or less parallel. There is another line CST to Panve 47 KM. But, this Metro is a small 11 KM line from Ghatkopar to Versova thru Andheri and vice versa which is near perpendicular to Western and Central lines. Hence, among rail users, only people wanting to travel Ghatkpar to Andher and back can travel. Total Mumbai commuters are 75 lakhs daily, whereas, Metro caters to 4 lakh only.

Sh Ismail Perinje, Agree with you that partial roll back stands justified. At least some respite to the Aam Aadmi especially who use suburban trains in metro cities.

Well regarding the Maharashtra Elections, I disagree with you on several counts: 1) In Maha, Congress -NCP is contemplating removing Prithviraj Chavan...So in effect there would be a 4th Chief Minister in a 5 year term!! 2) Congress NCP took a heavy battering in the recent LS elections - Most top leaders lost, there was heavy back lash from the citizens 3) Maha has seen corrupt rule for the past 15 years, so anti incumbency is huge 4) Smaller outfits like MNS & AAP have not made any impact in Mumbai & other parts of Maha, so its only the Shiv - Sena BJP Alliance that will sweep the assembly polls in Maha, rest assured

Good at least partial roll back.
Actually, suburban season ticket fare raise was about 150%. Published raise of 14% was mere EYE WASH, TOTALLY misleading and fooling the public.
It seems there was sharp division within BJP and its allies in the sharpest ever raise!
Increase should be proportion to peoples earning.
Railway revenue loss due to corruptions, accidents, diversions from low passenger area etc. should be accorded FIRST priority to improve Railways financial health.
That will make real development, not price raise alone.
