30 Uruguay fans arrested for violent celebrations


Montevideo, June 25 (IANS): Some 30 people were arrested here for violent celebrations Tuesday after Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 to advance to the round of 16 at the World Cup in Brazil.

Violent fans hurled stones and bottles in Montevideo's city centre after the match. Two policemen were injured in the chaos, reports Xinhua.

Public institutions, transport services and shops stopped service while the match was on. Schools also suspended lessons so that teachers and students could watch the game. Diego Godin scored the winner for Uruguay in the 80th minute.
