Islamic holy month, Ramadan begins

Riyadh, Jun 29 (Agencies) : Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting, will begin on Sunday in Saudi Arabia, the state-run Al-Ekhbariya television channel reported on Friday.

Citing the authorities, it said that because the crescent moon was unable to be seen with the naked eye on Friday, Ramadan would begin on Sunday. According to tradition, it is the sighting with the naked eye of the new moon that signals the start of Ramadan.

Other Gulf monarchies, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates also said Ramadan will start in their countries on Sunday. Algeria will also mark the start of the holy month on the same day. Yemen's religious authorities said in a statement that fasting would begin on Saturday.

US President Barack Obama has greeted Muslims across the world on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, describing it as the time for self-reflection and devotion through prayer and fasting. During Ramadan, Muslim believers abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex from dawn until sunset.

Ramadan is sacred to Muslims because it is during that month that tradition says the Holy Quran was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. The fast is one of the five main religious obligations under Islam.

    RAMADAN KAREEM!
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and in Muslim tradition is a time of heightened commitment to piety and purification. Fasting is among the special observances that Muslims undertake, in which they refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk.
Below are some tips for observing a healthy and safe fast during Ramadan:
Divide your food into three meals. Saher is the morning meal when the fast starts, Iftar is the evening snack when the fast is broken and then dinner.
Include complex carbohydrate foods rich in fibre, such as those found in grains and seeds. For example, whole wheat roti, brown rice, daal, beans, bajara, bran, fruits and vegetables should be eaten, particularly during Saher.
During iftar, dates and juice are traditionally consumed. Include three dates and 4 oz (120 mL) of juice to help normalize possible low sugar (hypoglycemia) and provide the much needed “instant” energy along with hydration. If you have diabetes, please consult your doctor.
Walking in the evening for at least 30 minutes is an ideal routine activity.
Drink as much fluid (preferably water) as possible. It is advisable to consume at least 8-12 cups between Iftar and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time for the next day.
    Avoid:
Fried and fatty foods Salt and salted food Foods containing too much sugar Too much tea or caffeine at Saher Sleeping immediately after Iftar and Saher meals.
Overeating especially at Saher can cause further metabolic imbalance, like highs and lows in your blood sugar and dehydration.
Eating too much refined food, drinking too little water and / or not eating enough fibre will make you feel bloated.
Indigestion can be caused by over-eating or eating too many fried, fatty and spicy foods, or foods that produce gas.
Headaches while fasting can be caused by caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, dehydration and hunger.
Watch for low blood sugar hence avoid over-eating.
