Ganga ghats to be developed for tourists

New Delhi, July 7 (IANS): In an effort to develop ghats along river Ganga as prominent tourist destinations, the tourism ministry Monday proposed to renovate the ghats, introduce houseboats and build more dams, officials said.

Union Culture and Tourism Minister Shripad Yesso Naik presented a proposal on this at the 'Ganga Manthan - National Dialogue on Ganga' - a day-long conference organized by the National Mission for Clean Ganga and attended by Indian and foreign delegates at the Vigyan Bhawan here.

"From Gangotri till Ganga Sagar, all ghats will be developed as a tourist spots. We are also thinking about introducing shikaras (houseboats) like in Kashmir," said a tweet from the ministry of information and broadcasting quoting Naik.

"There is a proposal to build dams every hundred kilometre (on the river)," the ministry said in another tweet quoting Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted: "Clean Ganga is an essential part of the environment. Clean Ganga will help in preserving our ecology. We are committed for clean Ganga. Today's Ganga Manthan is a major step in this direction."

"Nation is committed for continuous and uninterrupted flow of Ganga," tweeted Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti.

I think tourism should be the lowest priority area for the rejuvenation of Ganga. The only and only focus should be on improving the quality of water of the river. Other things would come automatically. The reports of poor quality of river water is already scaring a number of people who want to take a holy dip into the river. We need to rein in religious pundits who are defiling ganga in the name of rituals. I think there should be a river bed regulation like the coastal zone regulation and no activiity should be allowed within a distance of 500 m from the river bed like camping, eating houses. There should be a ban on selling food items and their eating within this prohibited zone of 500 metres. Ashes of funeral rites should not be allowed to be dumped in the river but should be placed at designated places on the river area to be disposed of by the local authorities. I also feel that creating a river deppth of 5 metres on a width of 45 metres stream of the river will be more disastrous as then this canal will be the only water flow channel during lean and dry seasons. More public views should be invited on this proposal before plans are drawn. With regards to all ganga intellectuals. ASHOK BANSAL
