Carrefour to exit India, shut five wholesale stores

MUMBAI/PARIS, Tue Jul 8 (Reuters) : French retail giant Carrefour SA will shut down its Indian operations and close its wholesale stores in the country, as it exits underperforming markets to focus on reviving its French business.

The world's no.2 retailer by sales, which has been operating in India since 2010, will shut its five Indian wholesale stores by the end of September, it said in a statement late on Monday.

Carrefour has been in talks with Indian retail companies and strategic investors about its Indian assets in recent months, after flagging in March that it was considering the future of the business.

It wasn't immediately clear if Carrefour had found a buyer for the business. A Carrefour spokesperson declined to give any further details.

The government opened up the country's $500 billion retail sector to foreign supermarket operators in 2012, but mandatory local sourcing requirements and a decision to let individual Indian states decide whether to allow global chains has deterred new entrants.

Only British supermarket operator Tesco Plc has so far announced plans to set up stores in India.

The new government under Narendra Modi, elected in May, has also opposed foreign investment in the supermarket sector, fearing it will hurt small shopkeepers.

The world's largest retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc last year called off its Indian partnership and shelved a plan to open retail stores.

Wal-Mart is now focusing on opening wholesale stores in the country and recently launched an e-commerce venture in India.

Carrefour, under Chief Executive Georges Plassat, has in the past said it will sell non-core assets to raise cash to defend key markets in western Europe, China and Brazil.

The supermarket operator has exited markets like Greece, Colombia, Singapore and Malaysia among others in the past few years.

Very good, let them go… after all these giant retail traders never go to any country to help their economy rather they siphon money from that country to their native place. As it is when we compare the price of LuLu, Carrefour price is always at higher side. Any how we don’t want any Fake people in our beautiful India!!!

It is strange to see that readers here jump the gun in their excitement to criticize New Govt. The business is being closed here as it is found not performing. It is because of inefficiency of the business or the model does not suit INDIA. It must be a win-win situation. Otherwise what is the point in having International business houses operate in INDIA?

Before advising others to read the news properly, it's better if you read it properly first.
The world's largest retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc last year called off its Indian partnership and shelved a plan to open retail stores.."so who was in govt then? Can we measurement it in same yardstick that you used then? Or did they see Modi wave coming? ( which you chose to ignore until 9 am in may 16 th? Deputy the news said that they took the decision after losses in India you want to misinterpret it as they sensed trouble coz of Modi? Was re was what a mind reader we have hwre in the forum who does not to accept the published news but want to propagate his own assumed theory or is it that you met the carrfour chief at if tar parry yesterday that he told about his feelings as you claimed???

Of course FDI should be only in the market for which India does not to have resource to supply. We don't want FDI in retail. FYI FDI on retail status is not the criteria firms sees to invest in any country. We at any time prefer our Ambani getting richer in retail sector than carrefour or wall mart or for that matter prefer even lulu. You Ali becoming a retail gaint. Not some foreign firm at the expense of Indian farmers.

If FDI is allowed in the retail sector, it will cause a lot of unemployment in India. Besides these supermarkets will outsource all of their products from China.
