Udupi: Spread of malaria - DC inspects Nittur slum areas

Udupi, Jul 9: Udupi DC Muddu Mohan along with the other officials visited the slum area located near National Highway 66, Nittur here on Wednesday July 9.

Various NGO's had given a complaint regarding the spread of malaria and other diseases from the Nittur slum area. There are 50 to 60 temporary sheds built by daily wage workers who have been staying there for the past 20.


There is a drain water purifying unit next to their sheds which leads to the breeding of the malaria parasite; various other diseases are also spreading to other people from these daily wage workers. Specially, most of the workers' children are affected with maleri and since they attend school, the disease spreads to the other children also. 

A lot of accidents also take place on NH-66 and considering the spread of diseases, DC Muddu Mohan has suggested the city corporation to shift these daily wage workers to a clean and tidy place and also said that soon he would discuss the matter with MLA Pramod Madhwaraj.

Malaria has been increasing in the Udupi district day by day and many people are complaining that the disease spreads from the Nittur slum area.

Ramachandra Bayari, city corporation commissioner Srikanth Rao, A N Madhyastha and various NGO's visited the slum area.

    Dear Mr DC. For months the people of the locality, including the staff from the Rural Health Centre have been complaining to the MCC about the filthy state of the area leading to malaria, typhoid and cholera. The pat reply being that the area comes under the Panchayat so MCC can do little- what rubbish is this. There is a finger type road and area besides this road leading from Bondel Junction through the NMPC quarry reservation area and then going on to Muddushedde that is outside the MCC area like a sore thumb. Since the place has been left to rack and ruin it is filthy and daily more filth is added. The stray dogs and cats add to the mess the people to show their frustration just dump their garbage on the road or besides it- there is nothing called drainage in the area and to add to all this there are scores of sand filled trucks that use this road- they clean their illegal sand in the stream in the NMPT area (with or without collusion) and use this road to get into the city.
    Add to this, a college has been doing construction for the last two years and there is a lot of stagnant water, thick undergrowth and even dead animals lying around.
    Mr DC you are the only one who can help as the Panchayat says they are "broke" and the MCC says it is outside their area??
