Mangalore, Aug 4: "Development in any sector is indeed good and very much needed.  However, now-a-days it is very sad to see the downfall in humane values under the pretext of development. Privatization and globalization too have yielded no better results," said noted Kannada litterateur Dr U R Anantamurthy.

He was delivering a lecture at a seminar on "Relevance of People's Movement in Today's Context," during the 11 Balasubrahmanyam Memorial Lecture organized by Corporation Bank officials at CBOO Auditorium on Thursday August 3.

He said that any people's movement should be organized and held within the ambits of law and not outside of it.  "In this regard the Narmada Bachao Andolan by Medha Patkar needs to be commended and supported.  In the early stages Medha Patkar saw success through the repeated failures.  But she persisted and despite enormous pressure from political as well as social circle, she has continued bravely.  Today lacs of tribal people are with her," he added.

He candidly expressed his views on development and social concern.  "In our country these kind of (Narmada bachao) movements are termed as anti-development.  But nobody can deny the fact that development and social concern should go hand in hand.  Any development which has more negative impact of the people and the society at the large should be scrutinized properly," he opined.

Federation of All India State Bank officials' general secretary G D Nadaf was the chief guest on the occasion while Corp Bank officials' association president T R Bhat welcomed.  Vice-president Koushik Ghosh proposed vote of thanks.
