Bantwal, Aug 7: The police have arrested one more person in connection with the abduction and murder of Puttumonu (45) a gram panchayat member of Ulaibettu.
The arrested has been identified as Yakub (28), a resident of Badriya Nagar near Mallur in Mangalore. He was arrested by CPI Bantwal M KGanapathy from Madupalla house in Manchi locality near Ira here where he had taken shelter in a relative's house.
His arrest was possible owing to the important tip-off given about his whereabouts by Sahul Hamid (23), prime accused in the case who was arrested on Tuesday July 25. With this the total number of persons arrested in the case has gone up to two.
Yakub was a close friend of the deceased Puttumonu. However for the sake of money promised by Sahul Hamid and others, he betrayed his friend Puttumonu. On July 8 he contacted Puttumonu and the pretext of settlement of a dispute made Puttumonu to accompany him on a mobike.
He then took Puttumonu to the murder spot at Kudthapadpu of Ira near here where the others were waiting. There the accused hacked Puttumonu to death in an isolated place.
The said motor cycle has now been seized by the police from Yakub and the accused has been produced before the court and remanded for judicial custody.
Police are still trying to arrest the other accused who are still at large.
