Mangalore, Aug 7: As expected MCC commissioner Krishnappa on Monday August 7 ordered immediate closure of abattoir at Kudroli here.

The slaughter house at Kudroli which has constantly been hitting headlines eversince the closure of the financial year on March 31, has finally been closed.  The temporary permission given by MCC for running the abattoir came to an end on Sunday August 6.  Accordingly, Cattle Protection Committee had demanded MCC to close the abattoir from Monday or else to face protest.

However, abattoir had started functioning on Monday morning too.  When contacted the concerned persons had told that they had not received any official order regarding the closure of abattoir and if they get it, they would shut it down immediately.  Now the late evening reports stated that commissioner has ordered the immediate closure of cattle slaughter at the only official abattoir of the district.

As reported earlier, once the new contractor Rajesh Shetty had made known his inability to run the abbattoir, MCC had decided to call of new tender.  Meanwhile the Karnataka Pollution Control Board had ordered the closure of the abattoir citing lack basic facilities and an imminent danger of pollution.

But the order had been vacated after the chief minister H D Kumaraswamy intervened.  So the abattoir had once again started functioning after securing temporary permission to run it till August 6, 2006.  MCC had promised to repair the abattoir in this period and establish all the necessary facilities there.  But now that MCC has failed, commissioner has ordered to close the slaughter house with an immediate effect.
