Mangalore, Aug 9: The Sri Ram Sene activists, obstructed the plying of two trucks carrying rice to Davanagere district, released by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) on Monday August 7.   They were alleging that the rice is being transported illegally. 

However, the district administration has denied these charges. A G Bhat, headquarters assistant, said that it was in keeping with the order issued by the government to transport the rice under the food-for-grains scheme that rice was being sent and that it would continue to do so.

He further said that the white rice had been received from the central government under the scheme.  But it was difficult to distribute it to the people since the people in the district are used to consume boiled rice.  So it was suggested that the rice should be sent to any other district where white rice is being used.  Meanwhile Davanagere district had placed a demand for more rice under the same scheme.  Hence it was decided to divert the rice to Davanagere, he said.

So, four trucks were loaded on Monday evening.  While two of them left the city by 6 pm, two more trucks were about to start late in the night, when the Sri Ram Sene activists stopped them at Maroli.
