Government agrees to debate on Gaza, but says not now

New Delhi, July 17 (IANS): The Rajya Sabha was stalled Thursday as opposition members demanded a debate on the Israel-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip. While the chairman agreed, the government wanted to do it another day.

The government had Wednesday blocked the debate, saying rules did not allow "discourteous reference" towards "friendly nations".

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj wrote to the chairman, urging him not to allow the debate.

However, as the chairman agreed to the debate Thursday, the government said another day should be fixed to take up the matter.

This led to an uproar as the opposition refused to take up any other business before the debate.

Government members suggested that the discussion on the railway budget should be taken up, and the other debate can be scheduled for some other day.

"The business advisory committee will meet at 4 p.m. We can decide when the debate has to be taken up," said Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Prakash Javadekar.

An agitated opposition, however, insisted that the debate be taken up promptly and urged Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien to give a ruling immediately.

Samajwadi Party leader Naresh Agarwal suggested that the debate be taken up under a rule which allows suspending all other rules.

"Either the debate shall be taken up immediately, or we can take it under rule 267, which suspends all other rules," Agarwal said.

Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said India also had economic interests in West Asia.

"Peace in West Asia is in the interest of India," Azad said.

As the opposition continued its uproar demanding that the debate be taken up immediately, the business in the Rajya Sabha was disrupted.

The upper house was repeatedly adjourned, losing its question hour, before the chair adjourned it till 2 p.m.

When the house reassembled, the scene was no different as both sides remained adamant on their stand.

While the deputy chairman said the debate cannot be taken without the government agreeing to it, some members quoted rules and said the Leader of the House shall be consulted but a consent was not necessary.

As the deputy chairman gave the go-ahead for discussion on the railway budget, agitated opposition members gathered near the chairman's podium, creating a ruckus.

The house was then adjourned for the day, without transacting any major business.

According to an official spokesperson in Gaza, the death toll since the beginning of the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip July 8 has climbed to 227, while 1,685 people have been injured, more than half of them civilian women and children.

This big bad world around us see this human tragedy through their business interests and not wanted a permanent solution to the atrocities of occupied Israel on the innocent Palestinian people.
If will discuss about it once our government gets a node from the USA, Israel and other business associates.
It is very sad that nobody is cared about frustrated human sufferings around the world.

    Bulsam,
If we are raising voices against atrocities on humanity ground then,
Simultaneously crimes in Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Gaza, Afghanistan Pakistan, Burma and Bangladesh, Srilanka etc. should be taken up debated and condemned.
    We shouldn't be ive.
If we are taking up killings only in GAZA, then it will not humanitarian, it is on the basis of religious grounds.
Of course all violence's must be condemned.

    Well said.
Why at a sudden concern( crocodile tears)over Gaza? why not on Egypt, Syria, Urania, Afghanistan and even on Pakistan and Iran?

IF you compare the death toll to Syria, Gaza is nothing. its 170000:
    200

don't waste tax payers money on discussing all this bullshit.

What is use of raising a voice for Gaza when HAMAS push down the peace treaty which has brokered by Egypt?

If USA or any other oil rich country afraid of Israel, can India do something, where as India cant avoid Evan a small blast by PAK terrorist.

Note: we do are against violence. only solution would be let HAMAS stop their nonsense and all will be on track.
people those who are supporting GAZA by updating green flag on their FB/Whatsapp profile do you mind to give your same support to those who are suffering in Ukraine or Syria or Afghanistan?

    Congress is bent upon disturbing
    the parliament sessions.
Mulayam said, 'We supported them &
    lost'. Shame on Congress.
All senior leaders (One by one) have already started saying that
Congress has to do something seriously about their leadership,
otherwise it will land up nowhere.
The main reason of their stressing
this debate is that Modi is not around.
Your own people are tortured and killed by next door(Lanka/Chinai),
you are worried about distant Gaza. Of course it is a sad situation, but you can't do a damn thing except crocodile tears.

What the hell is debate for? People like Gulam Nawab and some other have poke their Nose I hope. First we need to solve our own country problems which is the first priority. What Isreal is doing right they want zero tolerance on terrorisem. We want to learn from them how to react in this situtation. UN will intervene there. Our Govt can give suggestion that is all.

When there is darkness in their own house people rushing towards “Temple/Masjid/Church” to light the diya or candle!!! What a height of stupidity of Opposition Leaders? Instead of talking about our own problem in India, we are quite interested to solve others problem first? Though entire Indians kicked them out but still few “dirty dozen” left out in the current Parliament! Useless guys, useless ideas and useless discussions but properly using tax payers’ money at their will…….

Along with Gaza Parliament must also discuss atrocities on christians in Egypt/Syria/Iraq and Nigeria. Especially some 300 hundred young girls are kidnapped by Boko haram who want to convert them as slaves for jihadis. In addition recent violence against hindus in Bangladesh must also be taken up

Their is UNO to intervene, not only in the issues of Gaza but also serious atrocities on minorities in Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Nigeria etc.

Guys, if you must, learn from Israel how to handle a sick lying terror loving deviant population. You will soon need it in India too. Israel was there since Biblical times while Palestinians known as Philistines were invaders even then. Nothing has changed , only if it was possible for them they would destroy Israel any time. Do not allow deviant communals to hijack the parliament. We the tax payers pay for your time.Use it for our national priorities.

    Rightly said.
If we are kind hearted and genuinely concerned of humanity,
All atrocities committed on people, irrespective of their gender and religious belief, must to be condemned by one and all at all times.
