Tripura cop suspended after assault on BJP leaders

Agartala, July 23 (IANS): A police sub-inspector, tasked with providing security to Tripura BJP leaders, was suspended for negligence of duty after they were allegedly assaulted by CPI-M workers, police said here Wednesday.

"The vehicle of Tripura BJP president Sudhindra Dasgupta hit four CPI-M workers at Jatrapur. Following this many other CPI-M workers rushed to the spot and protested against the incident," a police official said.

Soon after the incident, Dasgupta along with several other leaders, reached the police station at Jatrapur village, 55 km from Agartala, alleging assault by the CPI-M workers.

The BJP workers led by senior party leaders then held a demonstration at the state police headquarters in Agartala.

The demonstration was called off late Tuesday night after senior police officials assured the BJP leaders appropriate action would be taken against the attackers.

The BJP workers Wednesday held protest rallies in all eight districts of the state.

The CPI-M said the allegation against its party workers were false.

Police sub-inspector Swapan Kar, who led a police team to provide security to the BJP leaders, has been suspended for negligence of duty.
