No money to pay Rs 200 school fee, girl sets self afire

Bhubaneswar, July 26 (IANS): A 15-year-old girl in Odisha set herself on fire after her parents said they couldn't pay her school fee, a family member said. An official Saturday termed it as an accident.

The incident took place in Khutuguda village in Nabarangapur district, about 700 kms from here, Thursday.

Kanak Dei Bhatra, a class 10 student, requested her parents to give around Rs 200 for school fee. Her parents are daily wage earners and said they didn't have the money, her sister Lalita said.

The teenager then went inside a room, poured kerosene on her body and set herself on fire, she said.

The family members and villagers rescued her but she had already sustained over 85 percent burn injuries.

She was shifted to a hospital where her condition is said to be serious.

District official Parikhita Sethi said he had visited the house of the victim and investigated into the matter. "It was a case of accident," Sethi told IANS Saturday.

The victim recently skipped classes and worked as a labourer to buy books and other study materials with the money she earned, local news paper Sambad said Saturday.

In a separate incident, a 14-year-old had committed suicide at her home in Aska town, about 170 km from here, last month after her parents said they didn't have enough money to buy her pencils, notebook, and other study materials.

Sad for the girl and the parents. May be they did not know whom to approach. May be they were turned down. But must appreciate the drive of the girl to seek education.

I get distressed even with this."ISIS jihadists order genital mutilation of all women in Iraq". We are fighting it out for the education here of the girl, and women have to fight for the fundamental right of existence elsewhere. What a world we are living in, in this 21st century.

We want missile warfare of 21st century and we also want oppressive, superstitious practices of pre-historic era.

Yes they should entitle all children, especially girls, to have a "right to education" if the parents of the girls are not financially sound.
People are still struggling to make ends meet to have two square meals a day and our politicians are talking about making India a superpower.

    What an India..
15 year old sister couldn't pay her school fees Rs.200, so committed suicide!!! it means she had no other option or hope.
Communities, organisations, social workers???? may be she does't know about any other way where she can get help. At-least there are no good relation between students and teachers nowadays. During our school times teachers wre supporting to such students or they used to lead them to such organisations which stands for them.
Still there are few social organisations which can support for basic needs of poor people, but no activity, no campaign, no counsellings or awareness.
Peoples, Students doesn't even know about their existence. We have everything in our society still there is nothing. this is India.
    no words..........

As tragic this episode is - and I fully sympathise - I find your commentators are ignoramus about governance when they lay the blame for everything at PM Modi's door! They only find targets to vent their views and feelings. Furthermore, PM Modi is not a divine person to know all that is going on in the lives and minds of each and every person in the over 1.2 billion population of India.

First of all the black money will never come back as both Congress and BJP are not keen to bring it back. Just the promises to fool the public, in reality the efforts are zero. Even if the black money comes back, do you think this will be distributed to our sisters for their education? The central Government cannot look into each and every village but it is the duty of village Panchayat to take care villager,s welfare. The Village Panchayat President to be taken into task. The attitude of the officials at Village Panchayat and Taluk offices is too bad.

Very very bad news. One more life lost for a silly reason. May her soul rest in peace.
Government should put more effort and support for the education of less privileged. We practically need "Sab ka saath, sab ka vikaas", not just in speeches.
