Mumbai, Aug 19: The city of Mumbai has been hitting news headline continuously in the last few months for some unusual happenings. While Pramod Mahajan’s story has long gone into the history, the vandalizing by Shiv Sena activists and the following serial blasts are yet to calm down. Adding to this is the rain fury which has been causing havoc in the city every-now-and-then. Now to this long series of unusual happenings, one more surprising happening is added.
If sources have to be believed, the seawater at Mahim has all-of-a-sudden turned into sweet water from Friday August 18. The salty water now tastes as sweet as any other soft drinks, said the locals. So thousands of people are thronging to Mahim shores either to bathe in the water or to drink in as much as possible, so that they are purified.
The shrine of Haji Maqdoom Baba is very close to the said place and the devotees are now claiming that turning of salt water into sweet water is nothing but owing to the power of Baba. People are filling the water in pots and carrying it to their home.
However, rationalists claim that this has nothing to with supernatural powers but it is a natural process. They say that many industries which are on the banks of Meethi Nadi (Mahim River) have been discharging their waste to the sea which might have resulted in this unusual phenomenon.
However, no one bothered to hear the rationalists. People are just flocking to the Mahim Shores. Police and the administration have been finding it extremely difficult to control the crowd.
Meanwhile, the health officers of BMC have warned the people not to drink the water without boiling it properly since there are all chances of people getting sick.
