Mangalore, Aug 21: Public did what was expected to have been done by the district administration. Katte Friends, with the help of the locals, have now re-named the residential area behind KPT "Veera Yodha Udaya Nagar" in memory of braveheart martyr Udayakumar who was killed in a Naxalite attack in Chhattisgarh Wednesday August 2.
There were complaints from people about the lack of concern and respect shown by the district administration, when Udayakumar's body was brought to the city on Saturday August 5. So it was expected that administration would do something to clear itself from this accusation. However, it did not. So the locals decided to do what the administration should have done. They collected Rs 10,000, out of which Rs 5,000 was used to erect the concrete sign board, while the remaining Rs 5,000 was handed over to Udayakumar's family.
Udaya Nagar was inaugurated by the late CRPF constable's sons Ritesh and Latesh on Sunday August 20. So the residential area KPT has got its own name now. So far it was addressed as 'behind KPT', but now it will be 'Udaya Nagara.'
District Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura who was present on the occasion said that Kalkura Foundation would educate one of Udaykumar's sons. Former mayor Shashidhar Hegde who was present said that as promised by mayor Ashraf the one month salary of MCC corporators, that is, Rs 50,000 would soon be handed over to Udaykumar's family.
Former Brigadier Ayyan Rai, corporator Lancelot Pinto, Navneet Shetty, Sadashiv Hegde of excise department and ex-serviceman Narayan Moolya too were present on the dais.
A condolence meet was also held in auditorium of Kadri Manjunath Temple which was attended by Tulu academy president Sitaram Kulal and others.
