Mumbai, Aug 22: One terrorist was killed in an encounter and another successfully nabbed early this morning by the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS), which is investigating the July 11 serial bomb blasts on the Mumbai transit system.
Police identified the two as Mohammed Ali and Mohammed Riyaz, both Pakistani nationals. While Ali was killed, his associate Riyaz was held.
ATS sources said acting on a tip-off, an ATS team, headed by Police Inspector Sunil Deshmukh, laid a trap near the Central Government Servants colony at Antop Hill in Central Mumbai, where they were coming to meet their associates.
At about 0430 hrs, a car came at the specified spot. When they asked the terrorist duo to surrender, they allegedly opened fire on them from an AK-47 rifle in their possession. In retaliation, the team also opened fire, in which Ali sustained serious injuries. He was rushed to the Sion hospital, where he was declared dead on admission, while Riyaz is in police custody, sources said.
Police have seized the weapon and 2.5 kg of RDX and a car used by them, sources added.
