Mamata attacks Modi government over rural jobs scheme

Kolkata, Aug 5 (IANS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday charged the Narendra Modi government with "discrimination" and claimed the Centre was planning to intensify the rural employment guarantee scheme only in select parts of the country.

In a post on her official Facebook page, Banerjee also said the central government was still to pay Rs.885 crore due to the state under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (MGNREGS).

"There is a hearsay that 100-day work will be run in some select blocks of the country on intensified mode. What would then happen to the poor people of other blocks? Would they be deprived of work?" Banerjee asked.

"Attacks on statutory rights of the downtrodden people are not acceptable. Why such action? Why poor people will be deprived? Why this discrimination?" she said.
