Uma Bharti promises to control Yamuna pollution

Agra, Aug 5 (IANS): The central government has promised action to contain pollution of the Yamuna river and restore its past glory.

Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Uma Bharti said this to a delegation of social activists led by Ram Shankar Katheria, the BJP's Lok Sabha member from Agra.

The delegation Monday evening submitted a memorandum of demands to contain pollution of the Yamuna, Agra Development Foundation secretary K.C. Jain told IANS Tuesday.

The memorandum said the Yamuna was a major source of drinking water, and it nourished and sustained India's culture, heritage and religion. But now it has been reduced to a sewage canal, and toxic pollutants were threatening the survival of heritage monuments along its banks, including the Taj Mahal.
