18 people missing as boat capsizes in Ganga


Mirzapur, Aug 5: Upto 18 people are suspected missing as a boat ferrying 40 people from Mirzapur to Varanasi is reported to have capsized in the river Ganga on Tuesday.

The boat is believed to have succumbed to the strong currents of the river and gone under in the afternoon said Superintendent of Police Pradeep Gupta.

Almost 22 of those onboard, knew swimming and they swam to safety along with some others whom they managed to save. Meanwhile the search continues for the missing persons. The NDRF, Jal Police and local divers have all rushed to the spot to give all the help possible.

The SP however has warned that there can't much hope put in store for the survivors as it is already night and quite dark. They fear that the number of missing people might eventually be more than the initially suggested 18.
