End Gaza's senseless cycle of suffering: UN chief

United Nations, Aug 7 (IANS/WAM): UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an end to "the senseless cycle of suffering in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as in Israel" adding that the massive deaths and destruction in Gaza have shocked and shamed the world.

The UN chief was addressing the UN General Assembly Wednesday on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

"Do we have to continue like this - build, destroy, and build and destroy," Ban asked.

"We will build again but this must be the last time - to rebuild. This must stop now."

Ban said people on both sides of the conflict have the right to life free from fear.

He added that more than 1,800 Palestinians have been killed - the vast majority civilians, including hundreds of women and children. Three civilians in Israel were also killed as well as 64 Israeli soldiers.
