Mangalore, Aug 26: The skin specialists of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, have announced a free ‘Acne and Skin Health’ check up programme at its clinic from Aug 28-30 at the hospital premises.

In a press release issued here, the specialists have stated the importance of maintaining healthy skin. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Although acne is usually not a serious health threat, it can be a source of significant emotional distress. Severe acne can lead to permanent scarring. Teenagers are more sensitive to appearance and how others perceive them because media -TV, books, magazine, movies... place large emphasis on ‘beauty’. There is an increasing trend among the males also to use peeling and other beautification techniques.

People of all races and ages get acne. It is most common in adolescents and young adults. An estimated 80 percent of all people between the ages of 11 and 30 have acne outbreaks at some point. For most people, acne tends to go away by the time they reach their thirties; however, some people in their forties and fifties continue to have this skin problem. Acne in India is prevalent in about 66,566,912 people.

According to Dr Balachandran, professor and HOD Skin and STD KMC Manipal, the exact cause of acne is an increase in hormones called androgens (male sex hormones). These increase in both boys and girls during puberty. Hormonal changes related to pregnancy or starting or stopping birth control pills can also cause acne. Another factor is heredity or genetics.

At the clinic, the Skin Specialists from Kasturba hospital will help patients get rid of such an emotional problem by using treatment modalities like Chemical Peeling, Comedone Extraction and Laser Therapy to cure Acne Scars, stated the press release.ll
