President, PM greet nation on Raksha Bandhan


New Delhi, Aug 10 (IANS): President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday greeted the nation on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

"Tying of rakhi (is) a powerful act that obligates everyone to ensure the safety and security of women," Mukherjee said in a tweet.

Small children also greeted the president at Rashtrapati Bhavan and tied rakhi on his wrist.

Earlier in the day, Modi said: "On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, I extend my warm wishes to the people of the country."

Women from different walks of life also tied 'rakhi' on Modi's wrist.

Among those who tied 'rakhi' on Modi's wrist were widows from Vrindavan and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh as well as members from various women's groups, including the BJP's women wing and MPs from Gujarat.

Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptulla and Hindu activist Sadhvi Rithambara also greeted the prime minister on the occasion and tied rakhi on his wrist.
