Curfew lifted in Myanmar's Mandalay city

Yangon, Aug 11 (IANS): A dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed in Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city, was lifted Monday.

All seven townships in Mandalay were placed under curfew since July 3, Xinhua reported.

As the security situation in the city has improved, the authorities gradually reduced the curfew hours and finally lifted the prohibition Monday.

The authorities have so far arrested a total of 56 suspects for their involvement in a sectarian riot which broke out in Mandalay last month and punished those who were charged for murder, arson, and illegal possession of weapons.

The police have also punished 1,400 people who broke the curfew order.

Sectarian riots broke out in Mandalay July 1 over an alleged rape case in which two people were killed and 17 injured.
