40 arrested in Kosovo's crackdown on terrorism

Pristina, Aug 12 (IANS): As many as 40 suspected jihadists were arrested in Kosovo for fighting in Syria and Iraq alongside terrorist organisations such as Islamic State (IS) and Al Nusra, police said Monday.

"In 60 raids, we managed to confiscate material evidence, long and short weapons, explosives, electronic devices, and passports," Xinhua reported citing police spokesperson Baki Kelani as saying.

Acting chief prosecutor of Kosovo Syle Hoxha said the raids went on without any incident, except in two cases where family members of the suspect tried to prevent the arrests.

"In general, even family members of those arrested welcomed the operation," Hoxha said.

Sevdije Morina, a special prosecution unit official, said the prosecution is also investigating some imams.

"The state institutions will firmly protect our civilised Euro-Atlantic values, individual freedom, secularism and constitutional and legal rights of all communities living in Kosovo," a Kosovo government statement said.
