Taliban detainees launch offensive in Afghan jail

Kabul, Aug 13 (IANS): Taliban detainees attacked a jail in Afghanistan Wednesday, triggering a gun battle with security personnel, police said.

"The police were going to shift 20 Taliban detainees and dangerous criminals from Shibergan jail in Jauzjan province to the main prison in Kabul in the morning when a Taliban detainee snatched a gun from a guard and other detainees, also taking the opportunity, snatched weapons from other guards," Sayed Amanudin Hussaini, deputy to the provincial police chief, told Xinhua.

Police and other security personnel surrounded the jail to re-arrest the detainees, the official added.

A gun battle started in the jail, Hussaini said, adding that the provincial police chief Faqir Mohammad Jauzjani entered the jail's compound and led the operations against the militants.

The commandant of the prison, Sayed Omar Naebzada, talking to the media, said the clash began at 11.30 a.m. and was over at 2 p.m. and all the detainees were recaptured.
