Contribute to peace, remove caste: Tamil Nadu leaders


Chennai, Aug 14 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah, in a message on the eve of Independence Day, Thursday called for contributing to "peace, progress and prosperity".

Rosaiah said: "Let us on this auspicious occasion resolve to dedicate ourselves to strengthen our national fabric and shoulder the responsibility of taking our nation to greater heights."

"May we pledge to uphold our nation's sovereignty and integrity and contribute our might for peace, progress and prosperity," he said.

In her message on the occasion, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said: "We pledge to protect and nurture freedom obtained after struggle and be united to remove the caste, religion and language differences."

Jayalalithaa said Independence Day was an occasion to remember those selfless freedom fighters who fought the British and sacrificed their lives.
