15 birds die due to kite strings on Independence Day


New Delhi, Aug 17 (IANS): At least 15 birds were killed and over 300 injured due to kite strings on Independence Day in the national capital, an official with the Charity Birds Hospital here said Sunday.

"Over 300 birds were admitted to our hospital. Fifteen died during treatment and a few are still critical," Sunil Jain, an official with the hospital in central Delhi, told IANS.

The injured birds, mostly pigeons, had been brought to the hospital till Friday evening. Some were bleeding and in critical condition, he added.

Sunil Jain looks after the work of Charity Bird Hospital run by the Jain community at a Jain Temple in Chandni Chowk area.

He said the hospital, which was established in 1956, usually admits over 50 injured birds in a day and releases them after treatment.

Kite flying is a tradition on Independence Day.
