200 dead, cholera outbreak feared in Nepal

Kathmandu, Aug 18: Incessant rains over the past week brought with it landslides, voluminous flooding, death and devastation in Nepal, destroying many villages beyond recognition. Surkhet, Bardiya and Dang are said to have been effected the most.

As the weather stabilised on Sunday, the government deployed more personnel and help to the region, only to end up unearthing even more bodies bringing the total count to 180 deceased. Close to a 120 more are reported missing and the search continues. Many were evacuated to shelters as rescue workers took advantage of the receding waters and arrived by land to render a helping hand.

Jhankanath Dhakal, chief of Nepal's National Emergency Operation Centre said that more than 3,500 workers were out there helping control the situation nd giving help where required. Helicopters have been carrying stranded people out of there as well as distributing food supplies to unreachable areas.

The area that had just lost more 150 of their people to a massive landslide. The floods have brought home concerns regarding water-borne diseases such as Cholera a blatant threat to the survivors.

Cholera which is known for spreading through food or water contamination due to faeces, seems very much an undeniable possibility.
