Gangster wanted for killing policeman shot dead

New Delhi, Aug 19 (IANS): A 28-year-old inter-state gangster wanted for the murder of a Delhi Police constable was killed in a shootout here, police said Tuesday.

Feroz, alias Fauji, was on a motorbike when he was cornered by a Delhi Police team in east Delhi's Sonia Vihar area around 5 a.m. Tuesday. A weapon has been recovered from his possession.

Feroz had come to Sonia Vihar in north east Delhi to meet someone from Loni when police got a tip off and laid a trap.

Police said Feroz was hit in his abdomen when they returned his fire.

"Finding himself surrounded by the police team, Feroz fired at the police party. The police party fired back in self defence and the accused sustained a bullet injury in his abdomen.

"He was taken to GTB hospital where doctors declared him brought dead," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

"Feroz was involved in 17 cases of murder, attempt to murder, assault on police personnel, robbery and Arms Act," said Yadav.

Feroz, a gangster operating in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, hailed from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

He was wanted for killing Delhi Police constable Shivraj Tomar, attached to Jafrabad police station in north east Delhi.

Feroz had shot Tomar in the chest when he tried to apprehend him July 14, 2014.

The gangster was identified after the scrutiny of the CCTV footage from a camera installed in the lane where the incident occurred.

Police arrested Feroz's associate, Billori, in the first week of August this year. He confirmed Feroz's involvement in the murder of Tomar.

Police said Feroz belonged to a family of criminals.

"Feroz's parents are active criminals and are involved in cases of drug trafficking. His brother, Imran, is lodged in Dasna Jail (Ghaziabad) in a number of cases," said the official.

According to the official, Feroz had fired at a local journalist, Shahid, in February this year for resisting payment of protection money by his brother who has a medical store in Ghaziabad.
