Global wind instruments fest in Kolkata from Aug 23


Kolkata, Aug 20 (IANS): Korean bamboo flute recitals, Chinese lion dances with flute and serene tunes accompanying Cambodian dances -- music buffs here will get to enjoy a variety of wind instruments from across the world at a unique event here beginning Aug 23.

The maiden "Calcutta Pied Piper Festival", to be held at the Rabindranath Tagore Centre of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) here, will have workshops and instrument-making sessions too.

Not only established artistes but upcoming musicians will enthrall audiences with live concerts.

"Through two days and 22 concerts, Kolkata will witness more than 170 artistes and 33 different kinds of wind instruments on one stage," a release said.

The event is being organised by the Siddha Community Foundation, ICCR and Calcutta School of Music. Percussion maestro Bickram Ghosh is the curator.

Performances will also revolve around the traditional Indian flute to the Bengal tribal flute, conch shells, duduk, oboe, saxophone, accordion, bagpipes, mouth organ, melodica and Rajasthani folk flute algoza.
