Goveas in line for double tennis crown


Chennai, Aug 29 (IANS): Fourth seeded Aryan Goveas will take on Rana Roop Singh Bhullar in the boys (under-18) singles final of the Ozone Group ITF Junior tennis tournament following straight set semi-final victories here Friday.

Goveas overcame sixth seeded Gnana Bhaskar 7-5, 7-6 (5) while Bhullar accounted for Nitin Kumar Sinha 6-3, 6-4.

Goveas is also in line for a double crown as he won the doubles title along with Aditya Anant Gokhale by defeating Basil Khuma and Sahil Deshmukh 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 in the final.

In the girls singles semi-finals, third seeded Jennifer Luikham upset top ranked Vanshika Sawhney 6-1, 6-2 to set up a title clash with Nandini Sharma who fought her way past Nidhi Surapeni 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The results:

Boys singles (semi-finals): 4-Aryan Goveas bt Gnana Bhaskar 7-5, 7-6(5); Rana Roop Singh Bhullar bt Nitin Kumar Sinha 6-3, 6-4. Doubles (final): 1-Goveas / Aditya Anant Gokhale bt 4-Basil Khuma / Sahil Deshmukh 7-5, 1-6, 10-8.

Girls singles (semi-finals): 3-Jennifer Luikham bt 1-Vanshika Sawhney 6-1, 6-2; 12-Nandini Sharma bt 5-Nidhi Surapeni 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Doubles (final): Ramya Natrajan / Vanshika Sawhney bt 1-Zeel Desai / Devanshi G Bhimjiyani 6-3, 6-3.
