Mumbai, Sep 11: When Vijay Shetty, orthopedic surgeon, LH Hiranandani Hospital, performed a knee replacement surgery on a 72-year-old patient, little did he know that the operation would earn him a place in the record books.

Ahalya Salian, who had been suffering from arthritis, underwent a total knee replacement surgery on April 14. Salian walked out of the hospital the next day, creating a record for the fastest recovery in such cases. Shetty then cross-checked with his peers in the country and abroad, found it the fastest recovery from such surgeries ever documented. Subsequently, he applied to the Limca Book of Records, which verified it and accepted the record.

"I performed the one-and-half hour surgery on a Friday. On Saturday morning, the patient told me that she was feeling fine," the surgeon said.  Shetty said the pre-emptive planning and the patient's mental preparedness had a lot to do with the fast recovery.
